Benefits of Home Births for Low-Risk Mothers

Benefits of Home Births for Low-Risk Mothers

Having a great birthing experience is something you should consider well before your due date. If you're currently a low-risk mom to be and have a reasonably healthy pregnancy, home birth could offer you a great experience you'll never forget. For women who prefer to avoid medical intervention homebirth is a great choice. It allows for the mom to feel more comfortable as she is in a familiar atmosphere and even allow her to feel more in control. What might make your decision even better is the fact that homebirths also have great benefits for your baby.

Benefits of Homebirths for Baby:

Benefits to the baby born at home are:

  • Less likely to suffer from trauma during birth
  • Less likely to forceps for delivery
  • Less need for NICU admissions
  • Fewer chances of needing oxygen after birth
  • Less chances of infections
  • Higher chances of latching on during breastfeeding

Benefits of Homebirths for Mothers:

While it's only natural for you to worry about the effects that a homebirth might have on your baby, it is equally as important to consider what effects it will have on you. When mom is in a better atmosphere, baby ultimately reaps these benefits as well. Here are five great reasons to consider homebirths listed below:

  • Your Own Comfort Zone - When you begin labor, you don't really want to leave your home to travel to the hospital. This could disrupt your labor pattern. In your home you are able to continue life as normal if you so please while you wait for your baby to arrive. There is no need to stay confined to one room as you can roam around your home and have the ultimate privacy.

  • Eat What You Desire - When you're in a hospital you are restricted in some cases on what you can and cannot eat. Some won't allow you to eat at all during labor. Since your body is taking up a lot of energy to bring your baby into the world, you may feel the need to eat or drink something to make you feel more energized. Instead of waiting for mealtime at a hospital you can eat and drink whatever you'd like in your home.

  • No Medical Interventions - sometimes the use of IVs and monitors can be annoying and it also confines you to a certain area. When you're birthing in your home with the support of a midwife or doula you are able to eliminate the need for all the needles, cords, and wires and can just focus your attention on a successful delivery.

  • Choose Your Own Labor Position - If you don't want to lie in a bed to give birth, you don't have to because you're in your home. You can use your bathtub, a birthing pool, or any other apparatus or environment for preparing to push your baby out.

  • Baby is Born at Home - Some mothers don't like the germs, illnesses, and other diseases that are present in the hospital. Birthing your baby at home removes the fear of your baby catching anything serious.

It is important that you make the best choice for you and your newborn. Home births can provide a wide range of benefits far beyond what you may have ever imagined. Research home birth and interview midwives in your area to help decide if homebirth is right for you.
