Passing of Fox Lake, Illinois, officer a 'painstakingly arranged suicide'

At first hailed as a saint after his demise, Fox Lake, Illinois, police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz is currently prone to be recalled by another mark: a deceiver.

What once seemed, by all accounts, to be the killing of an officer in the line of obligation ended up being "a painstakingly arranged suicide," George Filenko, Lake Region Significant Violations Team leader, said Wednesday.

"This arranged suicide was the deciding consequence of broad criminal acts that Gliniewicz had been carrying out," Filenko said, declaring the finishes of the examination concerning the officer's September 1 passing.

The officer had been taking and laundering cash from a police office program that tutored youngsters planning to end up law authorization officers, Filenko said. Gliniewicz, a pioneer in that program, had been taking cash for no less than seven years, he said.

The examination found that the officer, who had experience making mock wrongdoing scenes, arranged his suicide to make it resemble a crime.

The officer set his hardware at the scene in an "endeavor to delude specialists on call and examiners to trust this was a manslaughter," Filenko said.
